The project:
Updated stair case using laminate flooring cut to fit. Also added a painted pine shelving that I had to build in the room due to size for safety of the empty space and also build the new walls top and bottom for safety of our children.
- Materials:
Laminate flooring, metal trim for the edges of the staircase. Pine for the shelving and melamine backing. Structural pine, gyprock, plaster for the walls upper and lower. Then paint across the lot.
- Tools:
Circular saw, tape measure, drill, angle grinder, sealant gun, trowel and hawk, paint equipment and ladder.
- Step 1:
Cut away the old railing at the top of the stairs as it left too many open areas for kids to get through.
- Step 2:
Built the shelving unit in the kitchen, painted, then placed bars across the staircase gap to slide it directly into place.
- Step 3:
Removed the old laminate flooring from the staircase steps and replaced them with matching flooring to the renovated bedrooms.
- Step 4:
Cut the metal trim edges using the angle grinder and attached to the edges of each step

- Step 5:
Framed out the upper wall and against the open railing for the downstairs potion of the staircase. This was to prevent anyone from falling through the large openings.
- Step 6:
Gyprock to cover all of the framing upper and lower, then plastered to create the finished look.
- Step 7:
Added baseboard trim to neaten along the lower edges, then painted the walls and staircase internals, utilising the black on the framework to separate the levels.
