Heritage side access gate makeover

The project:

This tired old side access gate was falling apart so it was time to replicate and honour heritage home

- Materials:

Treated pine- ripped down to make own lattice look as it was unavailable , pocket screw Kreg , latch , hinges , lokk latch, clamps , wood screws, sander - sand paper

- Tools:

Impact driver , power drill , drill set, spirit level

- Step 1:

Measured old gate , then knocked it down Cleaned site

Ordered new materials

- Step 2:

Primed all new wood and then painted prior

to building

- Step 3:

Had my own plan roughed out on paper and begun

the process

- Step 4:

Frame work up. Old house nothing straight - old pipes to work around

- Step 5:

Adding a functional door for side access to our property

- Step 6:

Paying homage to heritage and replicating pattern on woodwork using a jigsaw and drill bit

Traced pattern of old rotted piece onto treated pine plinth

- Step 7:

More features. Sanded and filled and repainted and placed in position

- Step 8:

Filling of staple holes for painting touch ups

- Step 9:

Lokk latch - Gate latch added

- Step 10:

All done and super proud.
Had doubts that I was smart enough to do but give anything a go and absolutely love DIY and Bunnings

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I'm sure that any doubts you had in yourself are gone, because you have done an absolutely marvellous job recreating the original heritage gate. With the fresh materials it should last for many years to come.

Getting the angles right and cutting everything to size is one thing, but replicating the complex fretwork using a jigsaw is genuinely impressive stuff.

You should be extremely proud of your accomplishment.
