Custom built-In TV entertainment unit

The project:

Custom built-in entertainment unit designed to maximise storage and transform an unused wall into a functional feature. The project includes Kaboodle cabinetry, solid timber benchtops and shelving using Tasmanian Oak, an Easycraft VJ panelled TV feature wall, and a wall mounted TV

- Step 1:

Design
I used AI to give me a starting point and then designed and drew up the final idea

- Step 2:

Cut & Sand Timber

I cut all the wooden panels to size with a circular saw, using a level and clamps to act as a straight guide. Next, I used the router to add some rounded edges to the front of the shelve and benchtop part. I then filled any imperfections with Timbermate wood filler and once that dried, I used the orbital sand with 240grit pads to sand everything

- Step 3:

Assemble Timber Cabinets

I used a drill and wooden dowels with some wood glue to put the wooden panels together. I added wood screws on any edge that wouldn’t be visible to increase the strength.

- Step 4:

Stain Timber

I stained all the timber with three coats of Moncel clear varnish, allowing 24 hours to dry and sanding lightly between coats.

- Step 5:

Assemble Kaboodle Cabinets

I assembled all the kaboodle cabinets with the drill and driver. I used kaboodle cabinets legs to set the height, they allowed me to make sure the wooden cabinets fit snug on top without hitting the roof. Once they were all level I used 65mm screws to secure them to the walls

I used kaboodle filler panels to cover the gaps on the sides. For the baseboard I used a piece of pine moulding and the clips that come with the kaboodle legs.

- Step 6:

Instal Timber Cabinets and Benchtop

I lifted the two wooden cabinets into place, levelled them and then fixed them to the studs in the walls and roof with 65mm brads, leaving a small gap to allow for expansion of the wood. I then covered all the visible fixing holes in the timber with more timbermate wood filler. I then cut the middle part of the benchtop to fit in between and installed that by screwing up from inside the base cabinets below to hide all fixings.

- Step 7:

Instal VJ Lining Boards and Trim

I cut the easy VJ lining boards to size and used liquid nails and the brad nailer to fix them to the wall. I used the 42 x 18 moulding to give a nicer finish between the lining boards and the benchtop / roof. I then used the 12mm Tasmanian oak quad to cover the gaps left around the timber cabinets. I used Polyfilla on the VJ and moulding and more timbermate on the quad to hide all the nails

- Step 8:

Fit Push to Open Doors
At this stage I finished fitting all the kaboodle doors off correctly and installed all the push to open hardware. I also used white cabinet stickers to cover all the screws inside the cabinets

- Step 9:

Gap Filler & Paint

I used gap filler around the easy VJ lining boards, the baseboard and between the filler panels and walls. Once that was dry I painted the lining boards and baseboard using Dulux Primer as a base coat and 2 coats of Dulux Lexicon Quarter in the low sheen

- Step 10:

Hang TV

Last thing to do was reinstall the tv bracket and put the tv back up

The project took around 5 days total. 1 day designing, 2 days spent making the timber cabinets and 2 days installing

This is an outstanding built-in entertainment unit and a very impressive use of the space. The combination of cabinetry, tassie oak benchtops and shelving, and the VJ feature wall gives the entire unit a very polished, custom-made appearance.

It is clear that careful planning and craftsmanship throughout the project, particularly in the way you cut, routed, filled and finished the timber, concealed the fixings, levelled the cabinetry and neatly integrated the different materials.

Your detailed steps are incredibly helpful and clearly show how much thought went into every stage, from the initial design through to the final installation. Completing such a substantial built-in unit in around five days is a fantastic achievement, and the result looks both highly functional and beautifully finished.
