The project:
Front of house reception desk - This desk all came to life when my wife and I couldn't find something to suit the space we had created, Started with a rough sketch with no radius than turning into what it is today.
A beautifully modern and well presenting timeless piece.
- Materials:
x 70 x 35mm treated pine framing timber
2 sheets of 12mm structural plywood (top and base)
1 sheets of 4.5mm fibre cement sheeting (for the curved cladding)
1 box of 65mm timber screws
1 box of 30mm fibre cement screws
Construction adhesive
Flexible gap filler / polyurethane sealant
PVC external corner beads
Fibreglass joint tape
Cement-based joint compound
2-3 bags of render (Rockcote Coarse Render / patch and prep)
Masonry primer
Exterior paint (colour of choice)

Circular saw or mitre saw

- Step 1:
Build the Frame
Construct the frame using treated pine, making sure it's square and sturdy. Cut the curved top and bottom pieces from plywood to create the rounded front.
- Step 2:
Install the Cladding
Fix flexible fibre cement sheets to the frame using fibre cement screws. Take your time bending the sheets around the curve for a smooth finish. Tip - If using cement based sheeting, dampen prior to bending for best result
- Step 3:
Prepare for Rendering
Install PVC corner beads on all external corners and reinforce all joints with fibreglass tape. Apply patch and prep to all Joints prior to Base coating.
- Step 4:
Apply the Render
Apply a coat of Patch and prep to the entire surface Bedding in fibreglass reinforcing mesh, before finishing with a fine skim coat of course Rockcote render and float or sponge to perfection
- Step 5:
Prime and Paint
Apply a quality masonry primer followed by two coats of exterior paint. The finished desk has a durable, seamless look that's perfect for a modern reception area.
