Small backyard transformation with firepit

The project:

Our backyard was a muddy, unusable space that we rarely used. We wanted to create a practical outdoor area that suited our lifestyle and could be enjoyed year-round. The transformation includes a dedicated BBQ area, a firepit for entertaining, garden beds to add greenery, a wood storage area, and a decorative screen to hide the bins and water tank. The result is a functional, inviting backyard that maximises the space, looks great, and has become an extension of our home.

- Step 1:

Mapping out area with marking spray, drainage and earthworks including digging storm water drains, laying class 3 road base and compacting with a compactor and laying the crazy pavers.

The first photo shows you what we started with.

- Step 2:

Framing and construction which included timber screens for the bin storage area & the ugly fence, cladding bbq area and construction of the timber arbour above bbq and building the wood storage area

- Step 3:

Preparing and pouring the concrete seat and bbq bench top

- Step 4:

Getting my wife to finish painting all the timber surfaces & screens and sealing bbq area, concrete benches and finishing planting of all the greenery

What a dramatic transformation. The finished backyard looks incredibly professional and modern, with the crazy paving, timber screening, concrete elements and greenery all working together beautifully.

It is hard to believe this was once a muddy, unusable space. The BBQ area, firepit and built-in seating have created a fantastic spot for entertaining, while the screening and storage keep everything looking neat and considered. You have made excellent use of the available space and turned it into a backyard that, as you've said, feels like a true extension of the home.
