The project:

This renovation became a true family project. Using DIY skills passed down through generations and products sourced from our local Bunnings, we transformed our dated kitchen into the heart of our home. Together we painted the timber beams, refreshed the walls, added Easycraft VJ panelling, installed new benchtops and splashbacks, improved the lighting, and built custom shelving and a mini barn-door cupboard. Every weekend was spent learning, building and creating together, proving that with a little creativity, teamwork and Bunnings, you can completely transform a space without a full renovation.

- Step 1:

Removed the pendant lights, corrugated-iron splashback, old wall hung shelving cabinet, timber benchtops and the island’s back panel.

- Step 2:

2. Sealed and painted the timber beams and ceiling, using shellac-based Zinsser to stop staining.

- Step 3:

Prepared, primed and repainted the walls to brighten the space.

- Step 4:

Added Bunnings Easycraft VJ panelling to refresh the island. This previously was not a sit at island and had not stools so this was a huge change!

- Step 5:

Installed Taj Mahal stone benchtops and matching splashbacks. Whilst this was happenin, we upgraded the lighting to make the kitchen feel lighter and more functional.

- Step 6:

Turned the empty open space into a custom timber shelf with barn door coverings. Used a Bunnings door and track to create this.

What a beautiful transformation. You've completely changed the feel of the kitchen while still retaining its character. The VJ panelling, fresh colour palette and timber shelving work together perfectly to create that relaxed coastal style.

I also love that this became a family project. It's clear a lot of thought and teamwork went into each stage, and the result looks fantastic. The custom shelving with the barn door is a great addition and really makes the space feel unique.

Thanks again for sharing your project with the community. I'm sure it'll inspire plenty of members looking to refresh their kitchen without undertaking a complete renovation.
