Step down outdoor entertaining area with firepit

The project:

My son and I completed this step down entertaining area complete with firepit and built-in bench seats (thank you Bunnings DIY magazine for the how-to on the seats!) together with a built-in BBQ and side table, with a open/close shutter roof gazebo to provide protection from the sun whilst entertaining guests.

- Materials:

All timber products and materials from Bunnings except the firepit and bluestone.

- Step 1:

1. Earthworker hired to cut into bank approx 3.5m x 4m area. My son and I used shovels to clean area, measure out area and prepare ground, level, place drainage, then covered entire area with weed mat.
2. Laid masonry besser blocks along front edge and sides.
3. Build built-in seats with masonry besser blocks, pine timber inserts and build in BBQ
4. 100x100 timber pine posts to frame the slab mesh for climbing plants
5. Build step down with masonry besser blocks from house level
6. Add stepping stones and mosaic tiles around firepit
7. Fill with 14mm blue stone
8. Paint timbers and render masonry blocks on built in benches.
9. Erect gazebo over area
10. All pots and plants by Bunnings

What a fantastic outdoor entertaining space. The step-down design gives the area a real sense of separation, making it feel like a destination within the backyard. The built-in seating, BBQ and firepit all come together beautifully, and the louvre gazebo is the perfect finishing touch for year-round use.

It's also wonderful that this was a project you completed alongside your son. Those are the kinds of builds that create lasting memories as well as a great space to enjoy together. If you have any more images of the build, our members would love to see them.
