The project:
We transformed an old timber hutch into a modern, functional coffee bar instead of throwing it away. The cabinet was sanded, painted black, and the original handles were spray-painted and reused. We removed the timber back panels, sanded them back to bare wood, and finished them with a walnut satin stain to highlight the natural grain. We then added peel and stick tiles in white ,lighting, a mug shelf, and coffee storage to create a stylish and practical coffee station. This project gave an old piece of furniture a new life while reducing waste and adding a unique feature to our home.

- Step 1:
Finding the Perfect Cabinet
We found this solid timber hutch on Facebook Marketplace for just $50. Although it was dated, we could see its potential. Instead of buying a new coffee station, we decided to repurpose it into a modern coffee bar, giving an old piece of furniture a second life and keeping it out of landfill
- Step 2:
Preparation
We removed the original handles, hinges and timber back panels before giving the entire cabinet a thorough clean. The cabinet and back panels were then sanded to create a smooth surface ready for staining and painting. Taking the time to prepare the surfaces properly helped achieve a professional, long-lasting finish.To add extra character and create a café-inspired look, we also measured, cut and applied white peel-and-stick subway tiles to both side panels of the cabinet before moving on to the painting stage.

Restoring the Timber
We removed the timber back panels and sanded them back to bare wood to reveal the natural grain. Once smooth, we applied a walnut satin stain to give the timber a rich, warm finish before reinstalling the panels.
- Step 4:
Painting the Cabinet
After all the preparation work was complete, we applied primer followed by few coats of matt black paint. Each coat was allowed to dry before applying the next, creating a smooth and durable finish
Seal the project
Once everything was painted ,we applied 2–3 coats of clear polyurethane to seal and protect the entire project. This helps protect it from scratches, moisture, coffee spills, and everyday wear while giving it a durable, long-lasting finish.

Refreshing the Hardware
Instead of replacing the original hardware, we spray-painted the handles and hinges in a copper finish. Reusing the original fittings saved money and gave the cabinet a modern look.
- Step 6:
Reassembly
Once all the paint and stain had fully cured, we reassembled the cabinet by reinstalling the stained timber back panels, doors, hinges and freshly painted handles.

Creating the Coffee Bar
To complete the transformation, we added pendant lights, a coffee sign, a coffee pod holder and organised the shelves with mugs, canisters and our coffee machine to create a practical coffee station.To complete the coffee bar, we added white peel-and-stick subway tiles to both side panels,

The Finished Project
Our $50 Marketplace cabinet was completely transformed into a stylish and functional coffee bar. Repurposing an old piece of furniture gave it a second life, reduced waste and created a unique feature in our home that we use every day.

Overcoming an Unexpected Challenge
While preparing the cabinet, we discovered there was a large square cut-out in one side that we hadn’t noticed when we bought it from Facebook Marketplace. Instead of replacing the panel, we looked for a creative solution. We found a steel louvred ventilation grille, painted it black to match the cabinet, and installed it over the opening. What started as an unexpected problem became one of our favourite design features, giving the coffee bar a unique industrial touch while saving the cabinet from being discarded.
