Rumpus room wainscoting and paint transformation

The project:

My 25-year-old rumpus room needed a complete refresh. We wanted to create a warm, inviting space for us to come together as a family and spend quality time with our adult children and grandchildren, so we created a theatre room with ambience. Before the renovation our tried worn out walls were a plain cream colour from the original build in 1999 that withstood the test of 2 teenagers and small grandkids. I replaced the old green carpet and laid the unique floorboards myself a few years ago, but it never felt warm and inviting enough until I decided to take the bold challenge to wainscot the walls with my partner and add a colour that would change my whole life completely.

- Materials:

I purchased the following:

Wainscoting wood, nails for Brad gun, paint, filler, caulking gun,

gap fillers, painters' tape, Gyprock filler for walls.

- Tools:

Mitre Saw, Work horses, Brad nail gun, compressor, laser and spirit level, caulking gun, tape measure, myself and my partner.

- Step 1:

Removed the old heavy plasma tv and wall bracket and filled in 25 years of wear and tear on my walls. I used painters' blue tape to create the wainscoting patten that I felt would be perfect for the room size. The laser level was very handy to be able to make sure all my squares were in line with each other. I cut all the wood to size and even did the 45 deg cuts all on my own (which I have never done before) and then shaped it out on the floor first before we brad nailed it to the walls. Once all wainscoting was complete, we then gapped and filled around each piece. I had picked 3 bold choices of paint colour and decided on the British Paint colour Dark Silhouette 415 to bring this room to life and boy did it do just that. The whole project from start to finish took us 4 weekends and under $1000 to do but I am so proud of what we achieved and the comments I get from my family and friends are so inspiring that they all want to keep coming back to sit in the room and take it all in.

The wainscoting has added so much character to the room, and pairing it with the Dark Silhouette paint has created a really warm, cosy space that's perfect for movie nights and spending time with family. It's hard to believe it's the same room.

It's also fantastic to hear how much of the work you tackled yourselves, especially cutting all the mouldings and mitres for the first time. That's no small achievement, and it certainly paid off with a professional-looking result.
