How to add a bamboo root barrier?

We have a raised garden bed with bamboo in it and the bamboo roots are pushing hard up against the wall and have damaged it with roots and fungi looking growth poking out of gaps in the wooden retaining wall. I am going to replace the wall, but am wondering what type of bamboo barrier is best to install to stop roots finding their way through gaps in the wall again?

Thanks for the reply. Just confirming the root barrier in the link you sent is suitable for clumping bamboo? 600mm is perfect for the height of the garden bed in question.

Hi @caseyh,

If you're rebuilding the retaining wall, now is definitely the right time to install a root barrier. The best option is a purpose-made root barrier, typically around 600-900mm deep and at least 1.5-2mm thick. These barriers are designed to redirect the roots back into the garden bed rather than allowing them to push against or grow through the retaining wall.

When installing the barrier, it should run the full length of the bamboo planting, with the top edge protruding around 50mm above the soil level. This helps prevent rhizomes from simply growing over the top. If the barrier forms a complete enclosure around the bamboo, overlap the ends by at least 300mm and bolt or clamp them together to stop roots escaping through the join.
