Built-in Tasmanian Oak wall unit

The project:

Some 25 years ago I made a wall unit to fit the study in the house where we lived at the time. After retirement, we moved to our current address and stored the wall unit in a shed while we built our granny flat at our daughter and son-in-law's property. I had to reduce the width of the unit and then fitted two recycled doors from the main house kitchen, plus a lick of paint, and we now have the "new" wall unit looking good in the granny flat.

- Materials:

I built the original wall unit from Tassie Oak. I used two recycled leadlight doors from the main house kitchen plus a tin of white paint.

- Tools:

I used a circular saw, electric screwdriver and a belt sander.

- Step 1:

I separated the top half of the wall unit from the base, then reduced the width of both parts by 10cms. I fitted it all back together in the available alcove space. Some of the shelf spaces were reconfigured and the doors cut to size and fitted. The whole unit was then painted white.

What a fantastic way to give a well-built piece of furniture a second life. Resizing the unit and incorporating the recycled leadlight doors has given it a fresh new look while preserving all the craftsmanship that went into the original build.
