The project:
A dome for a garden Dalek, on a compost bin. Also, the compost bin component can be used as a compost bin.
- Materials:
Dome, 30cm hanging basket, Echeveria elegans, a base for the dome, I used a wheel trolley, dome cable ties. I’m using seedling coir, since can tolerate the dust from potting mixes these days .
Bottom section, a compost bin, lengths of pvc pipe, cut with a hole sore. A drill to secure the pvc pipes to the compost bin.
- Tools:
Cutters, hole saw, drill, watering can.
- Step 1:
I used Echeveria elegans from Bunnings, plus some others that were in stock.
tip the hanging basket like a regular hanging basket, resting in a pot. Place the plants through the basket wires. Back fill with more coir. Place the pot plant trolley on top. I used a bag which I pushed holes into for drainage.
The base, lengths of pvc pipe, filled with coir, then the succulents are pushed in. Need to compress the coir down, I did this with a garden trowel. Otherwise as the coir settles, the stems are cut off. I added this picture, to show the top and bottom together.
- Step 2:
Here, after adding the succulents. I tried to add an earlier pic. The base section, I was going to bore holes first the succulents, but decided not to. I wanted it to be movable, so lengths of PVC pipe on the outside. Some might suggest strawberries, but the watering needs to be more frequent than the demands of succulents. I did shorten the stalk later.

regular wooden Dalek, 1973 version. I thought the succulent version was funny. By having the succulents on the side in pvc pipes, it means the whole lot can be transported. Cineraria tapestry are the flowers.
