The project:
Hi, I wanted to make a highly detailed 1/4 scale model of a classic sports car = The MG TC entirely in wood . The model needed to be as detailed as I could possibly get it working by hand = (no computer assistance other than research on specifications and photos of the real vehicle to work from) . This was a real challenge at times . Details such as full mechanical details ,The acctual wheel spoke pattern , The door catches , Steering has been recreated in this 1/4 scale model . It had taken about 9 months to make from scratch .
- Materials:
Various Timber ,
Cedar , Pine -both board and Various Dowels, Victorian ash , White birch, MDF some Plywood and (card = for working out prior to commiting to timber) . Most of these timbers were sourced from our local bunnings …. The cedar used was recycled from the scrap from a local joinery that had been put out as firewood …. Also wood glue , sandpapers , wood waxes for finish
- Tools:
Pencil and various rulers ,old school compass .
A Ryobi scroll saw + blades and Table saw , Belt and disk sander B
and saw from Bunnings .
A multi tool puchased at Bunnings
Various small drill bits puchased at Bunnings
Wood lathe
Home made jigs for wheel spokeing .
Utillity knife and blades
Sand papers of different grits puchased at Bunnings .
Pine wood , Dowel , MDF ,Wood glues etc puchased at Bunnings
- Step 1:
Firstly , I worked with photos and specifications of the real car to work out how to base the model at a true 1/4 scale .
The chassis rails were made in hardwood to be able to take the weight of the completed model .
A rolling chassis was completed before the body was made .
Card cut used to work out the body panels and mudguards prior to commiting to cutting any timber .
