Girls loft bed and study area

The project:

My 9 y/o daughter wanted a loft bed with a study area underneath. After searching for an existing solution, I couldn’t find anything that was spacious, sturdy, had enough storage and was good looking. Inspired by other projects I saw on Pinterest, I decided to create a build-in loft bed myself. I designed the frame around 4 Ikea storage units and built a large loft area with stairs that fits a double mattress, has a 2 meter long desk underneath, and features a contemporary arched facade. One year after completion my daughter still loves her bed.

- Step 1:

positioned and secured ikea storage units

- Step 2:

Chopped 90 x 35mm framing timber to size and assembled the loft ‘floor’ and vertical frames. Positioned the frame parts in place and secured to the wall and ceiling studs and to floor boards.

- Step 3:

Installed loft subfloor using leftover particle board and ply from other projects. As well as 6mm MDF panels as a ‘ceiling’ underneath the loft bed. Our electrician helped us to do wiring for remote controlled LED spot lights.

- Step 4:

Cut out an arch using 16mm MDF with jigsaw, primed before securing to timber frame using screws.

- Step 5:

Reinforced IKEA Trofast unit with 16mm MDF panel so it is safe to use as a staircase. Attached MDF panel to the storage unit and the timber frame with screws.

- Step 6:

Using Ikea bamboo chopping boards created steps for the staircase and glued them with liquid nails. The chopping boards had a lip, which made it a nice feature for decoration and added extra sturdiness.

- Step 7:

Installed a flooring panels on loft floor area

- Step 8:

I reused an old Ikea wardrobe door and installed it as a loft side panel using liquid nails, small steel brackets and screws to secure it to the frame and loft floor.

- Step 9:

Using leftover MDF panel I built a bed head framing the top of Ikea Billy bookcase to create a ‘side table’ nook.

- Step 10:

Primed, painted, finished off with safety hand rails, installed the table top between the bookcases and it was done!

What an incredible project! It's hard to believe this was a DIY build. The design is both practical and beautiful, and you've made fantastic use of the space by incorporating a generous study area, plenty of storage and a loft large enough for a double mattress.

I especially like how you integrated the furniture into the build and added custom touches like the arched facade and bamboo stair treads. The finished result looks like something professionally designed and built.
