The project:
Restoring our 1897 heritage home has been a labour of love, and this bathroom perfectly reflects that journey. We preserved the original brickwork and timber floors while creating a functional space for modern living.
- Materials:
Throughout the renovation, we relied on Bunnings for both materials and tools.
We sourced many of our renovation materials from Bunnings, timber for the custom vanity, Mondella tapware, shower fittings and tile in shower base, paint, tile adhesive, grout, silicone, plumbing fittings, lighting, hardware and decorative accessories along with products to restore the original claw foot bath. Each material was carefully selected to complement the original 1897 red brick walls and restored timber floors, creating a bathroom that blends heritage charm with modern functionality and craftsmanship.
- Tools:
Ozito and Ryobi power tools, including cordless drills, sanders and saws, along with Craftright hand tools, laser levels, tile cutters, trowels, caulking guns, paint brushes and rollers, were essential in restoring the original features and completing the bathroom to a high standard.
- Step 1:
Carefully planned the layout to retain the heritage character while improving functionality. Selected materials, fixtures and finishes that complemented the original 1897 brickwork and timber floors, and measured the space to ensure every element would fit perfectly.
- Step 2:
Removed the old bathroom fittings, wall linings and damaged materials with care to preserve the original brick walls and timber flooring. Cleaned and prepared the space for the new renovation while protecting the heritage features.
- Step 3:
Installed new timber framing where required and sheeted the walls with suitable bathroom lining. Checked all walls were level and square, allowing for quality waterproofing, tiling and fixture installation. 1st plumbing visit for rough in
- Step 4:
Filled gaps, sanded surfaces and painted the walls, ceiling and custom vanity in a heritage-inspired colour. Careful preparation created a smooth, durable finish while enhancing the bathroom’s original character.
- Step 5:
Applied waterproofing membrane to all wet areas before laying the feature floor and wall tiles. Grouted and sealed the tiles to create a watertight, durable finish that complements the restored heritage space.
- Step 6:
Completed the electrical fit-out, electrician installed new lighting from Bunnings, along with power points, switches and a heater to improve comfort and functionality. Installed the final plumbing fixtures, mirrors and accessories, then styled the space with carefully selected décor and finishing touches to complement the heritage character of our 1897 home, creating a warm, timeless bathroom ready to enjoy.
