The project:
Replace rotten sleeper retaining wall, plant new citrus trees & decorative plants and install Oxyshield decorative panels
**Everything for this project: all tools, materials, plants and decorative panels were purchased from Bunnings Warwhouse**
- Materials:
Sienna sleepers, sleeper retaining stakes, screws for outdoor timber, builders plastic
Citrus trees x 5, Australian Lime, Navel Orange, Valencia Orange, Pink Lemon, Eureka Lemon (if space is limited, dwarf varieties are ideal)
Garden soil
Cordyline Red Star
Nandina domestica
Seasol Seaweed solution
Watering can
- Tools:
Electric chainsaw
Reciprocating saw with demolition blades
Wheelbarrow
Hammer, drill & screwdriver
Spade, trowel, garden fork, buckets
- Step 1:
- Remove and retain any plants you wish to replant into your new garden bed, then remove (and rehome to more suitable location, if possible) any plants which are too big or have invasive root systems (giant Bird of Paradise were in my courtyard - beautiful but too big for the courtyard and destructive to foundations & retaining walls). Chainsaw and reciprocating saw assist with removing large plants and roots
- Remove old rotten sleepers
- Install new Sienna sleepers, which are non-arsenic treated pine, suitable for edible garden beds and secure with retaining wall 'T' stakes then line sleepers with waterproof membrane - builders plastic
- Fill garden bed with bags of garden soil
- Install decorative Oxyshield panels to fence before planting, taking into consideration where and how many citrus trees will be planted.
- Plant citrus trees between Oxyshield panels
- Plant Cordyline Red Star in front of Oxyshield panels
- Plant Nandina Domestica in between other plants
- Water all plants with Seasol to reduce planting shock, and to help plants establish in their new position
- Sit back and enjoy your courtyard Masterpiece
