How to painting over wood furniture?

Hi all,

I am currently in the midst of painting my wooden dining table with water-based enamel (British Paints H2O Enamel Gloss) in a light beige colour. The table has been sanded to raw wood. I made the mistake of applying a water based primer with a spray gun to the raw wood (1Step Prep Primer, Sealer Undercoat) instead of using a shellac or oil based primer. So my wood has now started to show yellowish pinkish tints from the tannins and seems to not have correctly primed the wood. I want to know apply a layer of shellac based primer (insert brand below) and want to know if it is best to sand the existing waterbased primer, or if I can just apply the shellac primer over the top of the waterbased and then finally add a top coat. Also just in general wondering how well this shellac spray primer works for painting.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your dining table repainting project.

I suggest sanding the table back to timber so that the new shellac primer will go on directly to the timber surface and not the primer that's been stained. In this manner there will be no chance of product incompatibility, and you'll get a proper seal with the shellac primer.
