Stain or enamel loss on toilet?

Question

I have this area at the bottom of one of my toilets and I cannot figure out if it’s a stain or if the enamel has worn away.

I’m on a septic system so I am limited in the cleaners I can use, but I have tried various safe cleaners and it is not moved it at all.

Is it possible for enamel to wear away?   The toilet is probably 15 to 20 years old.

Hi @Tywoodpk,

That looks like calcium build-up to me. It's a thick hard layer that builds up on the bottom of the toilet. I had a similar layer on my toilet. I would suggest you remove the water from the toilet bowl using a sponge to soak it up. Then you can apply

. It's safe to use in toilet bowls and will help break down this layer. You might need to do a few applications.

Since you are limited to the type of cleaners you can use, I can only suggest trying out undiluted vinegar about half a cup. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes and then use a stiff toilet bristle brush on the stain. If it comes off, you can repeat the process to break down the rest of the stain. However, if it fails to move, then odds are it is a build-up of minerals from the water. I'm not sure if it can be removed with chemical cleaning products.
