The project:
This project showcases the transformation of my backyard into a modern and functional vertical garden that maximises planting space while enhancing the overall outdoor aesthetic. Designed to combine beauty and practicality, the garden features custom-built timber planter boxes arranged vertically, creating a striking green feature wall filled with succulents, flowering plants, and ornamental greenery. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and efficient use of space can turn a simple backyard into a vibrant, low-maintenance landscape that is both visually appealing and enjoyable to maintain.
- Materials:
Materials used include:
- Pine timber
- Metal pols
- 40mm metal corner
- 60mm galvanised screws for wood applications
- 50mm galvanised screws for metal applications
- Intergram Natural stain (Merbau)
- Geofabric (to construct planter boxes base)
- Fire Guard Gutter Mesh (to construct planter boxes base)
The main hero Bunnings product used in this project was the H4 treated pine timber boards (2400 mm × 100 mm × 25 mm). These timber boards provided a strong, durable framework while delivering a clean, modern finish that complemented the overall design of the vertical garden.
The second key Bunnings product was Intergrain Natural Timber Stain. This premium stain enhanced the natural beauty of the pine by highlighting its grain and rich colour, while also providing long-lasting protection against weathering and extending the lifespan of the timber in outdoor conditions.
- Tools:
Tools used include:
- Drop saw
- Hammer
- Makita Drills
- Grinder
- Step 1:
Step 1: Design and Planning
The project began by designing the vertical garden on paper. The layout included the overall dimensions, planter box sizes, spacing, and the arrangement of plants to ensure a balanced and visually appealing final design.
Step 2: Site Measurement and Preparation
The installation area was measured to confirm dimensions and ensure the structure would fit correctly. The site was then prepared by clearing the area and ensuring the existing bollards and surrounding surface were suitable for construction.
Step 3: Install the Structural Supports
Metal support poles were securely fixed to the existing bollards using 200 mm galvanised bolts. This created a strong and durable framework capable of supporting the weight of the timber structure, planter boxes, soil, and plants.
Step 4: Prepare the Timber
A total of 105 pine timber boards measuring 2400 mm × 100 mm × 25 mm were stained to protect the timber from weather exposure while enhancing its appearance. The timber was allowed to dry before construction commenced.
Step 5: Construct the Base Planter Boxes
The lower planter boxes were built first to provide the foundation of the garden. These planter boxes also served as the base feature of the overall design.
Step 6: Build the Vertical Wall
Using the prepared timber, the main vertical wall was constructed and securely attached to the metal support structure. The wall formed the backbone of the vertical garden and provided mounting points for the planter boxes.
Step 7: Construct and Install the Planter Boxes
Multiple planter boxes of varying sizes were constructed to match the original design. Each planter box was carefully measured, positioned, and securely attached to the vertical wall to achieve a balanced and consistent layout.
Step 8: Fill the Planter Boxes
Each planter box was filled with premium-quality potting soil to provide the nutrients and drainage required for healthy plant growth.
Step 9: Plant According to the Design
The final stage involved planting each planter box according to the original planting plan. A carefully selected sequence of succulents, flowering plants, and ornamental foliage was used to create visual balance, texture, and colour throughout the vertical garden.
Step 10: Final Inspection and Completion
The completed vertical garden was inspected to ensure all planter boxes were securely fixed, the structure was stable, and the plants were correctly positioned. The project was then cleaned and prepared for ongoing maintenance, resulting in a functional and attractive backyard feature.
