The project:
We (my husband and I) transformed a drab, narrow side passage of our home into a clean, modern walkway. The project involved burying existing concrete pavers to create a geometric look. To add depth, I stapled grey PVC garden screening to the fence for privacy, added artificial bamboo panels, and lined the path with layered potted plants for a pop of vibrant colour. I also painted the side gate and added solar lights to complete the transformation. What was once a forgotten shortcut is now a functional, visually stunning feature of the home that I love admiring.

- Step 1:
The first step was to lift the existing pavers, which were just placed on top of the rocks/gravel. This is what it looked like when we moved in last year.
- Step 2:
The next step was to work out where we wanted to place them.
- Step 3:
Once decided, we moved the rocks to one side, laid a mix of paver sand and concrete to hold them in place.
- Step 4:
I then painted the side gate in a similar colour to the front facade of the home.
- Step 5:
We continued the complete the path, one by one, measuring them equally apart and ensuring they were level. I even painted the white drain caps the same colour.
- Step 6:
Once the inside path was done, we continued the paving outside the gate under the bins, for a cohesive look. We then added 3 planter boxes and hedges.
- Step 7:
Once the hedges were planted, we added an black aluminium screen in front of the bins to complete the look.
- Step 8:
2 more artificial bamboo panels were added to the brick wall just inside the gate above the planters, which is adjacent to a window into the house, which created something nice to look at than a blank wall.
- Step 9:
Additional artificial bamboo panels were added at the end of the path and stapled to the fence, as was the garden screening along the length of the remaining fenceline.
- Step 10:
The concrete around the air conditioning unit was high pressure cleaned before putting up the lattice panel, which was painted the same colour as the side gate.
We then added various potted plants along the fence (garden screening) including red cordylines to add a pop of colour and more greenery to complete the look.
