The project:
My wife requested a more attractive garden shed rather than the dull original green metal shed.
I decided on something that symbolised rural Australia & reminded me of life on a farm.
I raised the shed with a new floor then added a corrugated iron facade & skillion roof, a paved floor verandah then 2 sliding timber barn doors in a rustic style. The result was a happy wife, a very functional garden shed & a great spot for a coffee or drinks in the shade.

- Tools:
The main tools used were a Makita drop saw,cordless drill & rotary hammer drill for screws. My Dewalt cordless saw & angle grinder cut the size the floor, plywood door sheets & corrugated metal sheeting. A Makita planer cleaned up the old boards for the barn door frames.
- Step 1:
The existing 3mt x 2.3mt metal garden shed was moved aside & the hinged doors removed. This made space for the shed base to be upgraded with a frame of 200mm treated pine sleepers & termite resistant yellow tongue flooring. A further frame of 200mm sleepers to mount the shed walls onto raised the headroom inside the shed which was a great improvement.
- Step 2:
600x300mm paving blocks were laid over a crusher dust base layer in front of the shed for the verandah area. The facade frame was assembled on a concrete driveway in 2 halves for ease of assembly onto the front of the shed. A temporary mock up on the shed checked appearance & sizes first before final cutting.
- Step 3:
Galvanised steel post bases were concreted in at the edge of the paved area for the verandah posts. The facade was cladded with corrugated
zincalume sheets & trimmed with custom flashings for appearance & weather proofing.
- Step 4:
Recycled Oregon beams were planed to 90x45mm & screw fixed to plywood sheets for a very stable rigid door. The plywood sheet was grooved slghtly with a cordless saw to resemble vertical panelling. Rusted bolts & a coat of deck finish added character & weather resistance. Steel flat bar was fixed across above the door opening for a flat stable mount surface for the sliding barn door rail kit. The verandah roof sheet top edges are cut at an angle so the sheets tightly join against the vertical wall corrugations to minimise sealant required. Handles made using copper plumbing tube & very old bridge bolts & an antique style padlock complete the rustic appearance.
