The project:
I made use of an empty space between my fridge and a wing wall in the kitchen to build an āinvisibleā sliding pine cabinet on castors with shelves for spices, vinegar and olive oil bottles. I can easily access the shelves when I am cooking on my stove top.
- Materials:
Pinewood panels, MDF board, cabinet handle, castors, curtain rods, curtain rod saddles, wood screws, paint, cabinet draw lining paper and rubber panelling for abrasion protection.
- Tools:
drill, drill bit, screwdriver, hacksaw, timber saw, timber glue, tape measure, paint brush and roller
- Step 1:
Cut pine panels to size, glued and screwed the panels into frame to fit the height of my fridge, the depth of the space and the width of the void between the fridge and wall.
- Step 2:
Cut panels for individual shelves and used screws and saddle brackets to hold them in place (so they were weight bearing).
- Step 3:
Painted the inside or internal facing parts of the cabinet white and the external facing parts grey to match the colour of the fridge (to make the cabinet āinvisibleā).
- Step 4:
Fitted MDF backboard, cut to size and screwed to the timber frame. Added rubber sheet panelling to the back board to protect my fridge from rubbing against the sliding cabinet.
- Step 5:
Fitted cabinet handle on the front, castors (x 2) on the bottom of the cabinet (smooth action back and forth) and fitted curtain rods and handles on each shelf to stop objects falling off
