Sideboard transformation using chest

The project:

The chest was given to me as the owner had no luck selling it. I decided to transform it into a sideboard and fill an empty space in my living room. I love the look of fluting, and chocolate is one of my favorite colours. It has been my biggest DIY furniture project to date!

- Materials:

Pine moulding tri-quad 19x19mm- 2.4m cut to fit the front panel.

Hobby wood Boyle 915x75 sheet.

Solid wood furniture legs.

Selleys Aquadhere wood glue.

Cabinet Knob Knurld taskmaster- brushed brass.

Taubmans 3 in 1 primer sealer undercoat. Dulux chocolate souffle paint.

British Paints furniture clear matt protective finish.

All products except the furniture legs were purchased at Bunnings.

- Tools:

Drop saw for cutting the pine moulding

Small roller for undercoat

Wagner FlexioW590 for topcoats

paintbrushes for small touchups and sealer

- Step 1:

I cleaned the chest, scuff sanded and removed the small square legs.

- Step 2:

Removed lid and applied one coat of Taubmans 3 in 1 primer sealer undercoat with roller.

- Step 3:

Glued pine moulding and sprayed 2 coats of Dulux chocolate souffle paint.

- Step 4:

Attached legs and knobs and this is the finished product. I really enjoyed doing this project and will hopefully upcycle more pieces in the future.

Many thanks for sharing your sideboard upcycle project. You have done a magnificent job converting an old chest into a beautiful sideboard with modern touches. The fluting adds depth and interest to the piece, and the chocolate colour with gold accents gives it a rich, elegant finish.

The new legs and handles complete the transformation beautifully, and I am sure this project will inspire plenty of members to look at old furniture in a new way. I hope this is the first of many upcycles you share with us.
