The project:
Our ensuite shower was badly leaking with not having the right water proofing under the tiles. The mould build up was getting pretty bad so we really did need to renovate but we really didn't want to break the bank doing it. We have renovated a few times and spend 50% of our time at Bunnings in the process. Being able to do most of the work ourselves and buying almost everything to do it from Bunnings made the whole process actually pretty fun and rewarding!

- Step 1:
Note: This makeover was completed by amateurs who love DIY. Well, actually the wife loves DIY and the husband goes along with the wife's ideas! No interior designer, no builder. We managed the project and did the majority of work ourselves. Except for Dave the Tiler. He is a legend! Day One, Josh is on the hammer drill ripping the bathroom out, Safety first in his Citeco Folding Earmuffs
- Step 2:
Uncle Gary came over to sort the walls out, this was then left for three weeks as it took so long to dry. We left the floor tiles and existing cabinets to save money, with the plan to tile over the floor and get new cabinet doors made by a cabinet maker. Selleys 750ml Instant Sugar Soap Spray was the best thing ever to bring the inside of the cupboards back to life and look brand new. To also save on money, we kept the taps and shower head in the same place.
- Step 3:
Dave the Tiler was on the job and did a magnificent job lining these tiles up. We work full time so working in the evenings when we needed to do reno work, the Arlec 2 x 30W 6000lm LED Worklight With 1.4m Enhanced Tripod was a winner! Notice our trusty Stanley 5m 19mm Yellow Tape Measure is never too far away. We learnt the 'Measure twice, cut once' rule the hard way!
- Step 4:
I mean, spot what isn't from Bunnings!! Probably my favourite Bunnings purchase would have to be my RYOBI 1250W 20L Wet and Dry Vacuum. I am forever cleaning up, keeping a tidy worksite. Notice we have kept the wall tiles, again as a cost saver and will attach the James Hardie VJ panelling over the top. We couldn't find the 1200mm size as we only wanted the half wall so we bought the 2700mm and the superstars in the trade area of Bunnings kindly cut them to size for us…free of charge!! I didn't even know they offered that service!
- Step 5:
The toilet cubicle in the ensuite needed an upgrade too so we installed the Caroma Luna Back Entry Wall Faced Toilet Suite. Rather then spend money, and hassle, on the toilet area walls with panelling we decided to try painting the tiles instead. Have to say, so super impressed with how this turned out. The tile look brand new! We used the White Knight 1L Renew Tile & Laminate Primer Paint. It needed three coats but was worth taking time with it. Really happy with how this turned out.
- Step 6:
Time for the panelling. Had to call Dad in to help with getting this part right and give us a hand. This has just come up so beautifully and such a difference to those dated tiles. The Dulux Wash and Wear, Vivid white for the win with it's crispy, fresh look. Obsessed with the 138 x 18mm 5.4m Moulding White Pine FJ Primed Aus Colonial that has just elevated the whole room. To make the whole room look fresh we painted the ceiling, skirting boards and walls in the same Vivid White colour. This is a game changer. The existing claw foot bath that inspired the style of the whole room is ready to be re installed.
- Step 7:
Silicone everywhere!!! Selleys 300g White Wet Area Waterproof Silicone Sealant . Making sure we had the white silicone was important to keep everything white. We used the silicone under the skirting boards and around the base of the toilet. Can we take a moment for the cutest little wooden stool you ever did see! Home Bazar Belize Suar Stool
- Step 8:
Plumbing time - Because we kept all the plumbing in the same space, we were able to do this all ourselves. Well Josh did it himself. The Mondella range has such a high end classic look, it was perfect for this room. Super easy to install too.

Tonight is the first shower in here after sharing the main bathroom with three teenagers for the last two months! You'll see we went bold with the new cabinet doors in Topiary Green.
