The project:
I found this 1940's Chillerator fridge in bad condition, totally termite eaten. I totally restored it right down to matching the original colour.
- Materials:
Pine wood for frame, Plywood sheet, brad nails, wood glue, screws, sandpaper, paint.
- Tools:
Circular saw, router, sander, sanding block, sand paper, brad nailer, drill, paint spray gun, welder, soldering iron, kero burner torch
- Step 1:
- Take full measurements of everything including exact positions of catches, hinges, nameplate on the door.
- Strip the whole thing down and separate the internal metal cabinetry inside.
- Clean and cover the internal metal cabinetry.
- Source correct sized pine to recreate the frame.
- Cut each frame section and recreate the exact radius's used on each frame section.
- Set up dowels for each joint
- Assemble, glue, strap, and clamp the new frame together.
- Cut the plywood doors, sides, top and bottom.
- Rout radius everything that needed it.
- Sand everything smooth.
- Primer paint the frame and plywood panels.
- Solder repair a section of the top icebox compartment drip tray.
- Assemble everything and top coat paint the fridge
- Get hinges and catches re-chromed and rebuilt.
- Install the internal metal cabinetry.
- Lay out, mark and pre-drill holes for catches, hinges, nameplate badge, then fit them.
- Install new door seals
- Weld repair the base legs and feet then paint.
- Finished.
