Raised garden beds for vegetables

The project:

To design and build a beautiful, sustainable and practical vegetable garden that was sympathetic to the surroundings. The focus was on easy access to all garden beds that were raised to minimise bending and move away from traditional rectangular beds. The use of pebbles around the beds reduces weeds and provides excellent drainage.

- Step 1:

1. Remove all existing weeds and debri from the area including the stones from the old garden bed

- Step 2:

2. Set out the proposed garden beds using line marking paint

- Step 3:

3. Construct the first layer of the raised bed , starting with the 2 semi circular ends the measure the approximate distance and angle to follow the marked out design. Cut the sleepers to length and mitre each end to the desired angle. Join each piece on the inside with the timber lok bracket and 40mm screws and on the outside with the 75mm screws. Be sure to record the length and angle of mitre cut for each piece of timber so you can replicate it for the second layer of the raised bed. Hammer in 4-5 star pickets and screw to the timber

- Step 4:

4. Using the cut lengths and angles from the first layer repeat for the second layer. Screw the top layer to the bottom layer using 75mm screws on the inside.

- Step 5:

5. Fill with a good quality garden mix . I have used cardboard on the ground to suppress weeds.

- Step 6:

6. Mulch the walkways and surrounding area with mulch I have used 10mm river pebbles

The flowing shape of the raised beds gives the space a unique, inviting feel, while the pebble pathways make it easy to move through and enjoy every part of the garden. It's clear a lot of thought went into creating a space that's both practical and visually appealing, and the finished result is a fantastic place to grow fresh produce for years to come.
