The project:
Bunnings has a growing selection of arts and craft supplies just waiting to be discovered! Here is the first craft project I made with the help Bunnings craft section……and hardware!
- Materials:
Wooden craft boxes, paint, PVA glue, nuts, bolts, washers, wooden cutouts, stick on adhesive, air dry clay, glass beads, spray paint

Paint brushes, sponges, wire cutters,
- Step 1:
Tour the craft aisle for inspiration!
I started with a plain wooden 'Book' shaped box. Then grabbed some paint, sponge brushes, beads and wooden cutouts. A tour through the nuts and washes aisles gave me an idea of a Steampunk inspired owl! So, I added some wooden craft boards.
- Step 2:
For the Book Box -at home, smooth off any rough edges. For textured look, apply tissue paper/paper towel and 'paint' over with PVA glue. Now it's time to get creative! Arrange wooden cut outs, washers, off cuts of fabric, old and broken jewellery, bits of rubber, plastic flowers, hearts, ANYTHING that fits your vision! Glue onto your textured box. Note You can arrange your items without gluing them down right away, working out what works/looks best. You can layer things like buttons and washers, cogs and foam to give a 3D effect.
- Step 3:
When everything is glued down, a quick coat of Gesso will help any paint or powders to adhere to your glued on bits and pieces. I added some black acrylic paint to the Gesso in a small dish as black is the undercolour I wanted. Make sure you get under any raised bits you have.
When dry, dab a small amount of paint onto a brush or foam square and gently brush over the tops of the items. You can use as many colours as you like and add some mica powder, gold paint or metalic paint.
If you make a mistake or don't like the colours you can simply paint over it with black paint and start again!
- Step 4:
When everything is dried, spray with a protective coating of clear Matte or gloss spray. Paint the inside whatever colour you want. Or use a gold paint pen to draw a design.
