Wall-mounted storage for skis and bikes

The project:

As a family who loves staying active our collection of bikes, skis and outdoor gear quickly turned our front entrance into an equipment overload. We wanted a practical storage solution that kept everything organised, easy to access and looked great from the moment you walked through the door. After giving the wall an updated paint, using Tasmanian oak, stain and hardware from Bunnings we designed and built a custom wall-mounted storage system. Every piece was measured, stained and securely fixed into the wall, transforming a cluttered entry into a functional, welcoming space that showcases our family's passion for adventure.

- Step 1:

Purchased all timber, hooks, screws, wall anchors, stain and supplies from Bunnings.

- Step 2:

Stained Tas Oak to match hooks, allowing them to dry before installation.

- Step 3:

Measured the wall and marked out the position and spacing of each ski rack using a mock-up to ensure comfortable clearance.

- Step 4:

Pre-drilled all holes in the timber, then marked and drilled the wall for the mounting points.

- Step 5:

Installed plasterboard anchors where required and securely fixed the timber uprights and ski hooks to the wall.

- Step 6:

Measured the bicycle storage area, double-checking spacing to allow easy access and prevent the bikes from touching.

- Step 7:

Pre-drilled the timber and wall for the bike racks, then installed wall anchors and securely fixed each bike mount.

- Step 8:

Mounted the bikes, skis and accessories, making final adjustments to ensure everything is organised and easy to access.

- Step 9:

Installed the coat hooks for jackets.

This is such a clever and beautifully executed storage solution. The custom Tasmanian oak racks make fantastic use of the wall space, turning your bikes, skis and outdoor gear into an organised feature that reflects your family's love of adventure. The fresh paint and warm timber finish create a welcoming entry, while keeping everything easy to access and neatly displayed.
