Sitting room makeover using paint

The project:

When we moved into our new home we were overwhelmed by the incredibly bright colours the previous owners used. The front fireplace room was used as a dining room which felt like a waste of such a nice space. We wanted to transform it into a room we would use all the time and make the most of the fireplace so decided a sitting room was best. It’s now a calm room we spend the most time in, sitting by the fireplace relaxing.

- Materials:

Dulux was n wear paint

Dulux semi gloss paint (for skirts)
Dulux one step primer
Dulux ceiling paint
Selleys spakfilla

- Tools:

frog tape
Uni-pro roller kit
Monarch cutting in pad
Monarch brushes
Paint partners plastic drop sheet
Rocket Sanding block

- Step 1:

patch and sand any imperfections

Sand back fireplace mantle to original timber

Base coat of dulux one step primer

Paint walls 2 coats

Tape windows and above skirts once dry

Paint all trims (skirts and windows)

Paint ceiling

Paint fireplace with special fireplace paint advised by bunnings paint department

- Step 2:

decorate and add furnishings

This is such a beautiful transformation that has completely changed the feel of the room. Turning the dining space into a cosy sitting room centred around the fireplace was a fantastic idea, and the lighter colour palette creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for relaxing with a book or enjoying time with family and friends. The furnishings and décor all work together beautifully, making this a space that feels timeless and inviting. If you have any progress or in-between photos, we'd love to see how this lovely room came together.

Here are more before and after pictures. We have since changed the floor rug to the green one seen in later images and painted the ceiling white. We still need to re-tile the fireplace base. We removed the previous owners carpet floors down to the original floorboards (surprisingly in good condition), then sanded using the Bunnings hire centre, never care to see that much dust again lol). My husband added some transition timber pieces on the floor to fix where over the years there was different flooring used. We used a water based polyurethane on the floors for a natural finish that really brings out the timbers details. The previous yellow walls and trims and sky blue ceiling was an insult to the eyes. It’s much brighter, modern and fresh now.

What a stunning room, you have now created, I could imagine sitting by the fireplace reading a book, and maybe sipping a glass of mulled wine in the winter, how happy your fur baby looks .
