The project:
We have a very long roadside boundary as our property is situated on a bend in the road at the top of a hill. We had previously landscaped the verge on the eastern side of our driveway entrance, however with a new house being built opposite we had tradies parking their vehicles up on our verge which was dangerous and also creating muddy tyre tracks. We decided to fit treated pine sleepers painted with Dulux monument around the boundary and also stepping up the slope.
- Materials:
We used 200 x 50 x 2400 treated pine sleepers and 60cm star pickets to fix the sleepers in position.
We also purchased 5 metre lengths of merbua edging which I fixed to the base of the sleepers to add contrast and provide more depth on each sleeper.
We also purchased Dromana granite rocks from Rock & Red Gum in the Dromana Industrial Estate.
We removed a great deal of wild growth, shrubs and dead trees and branches.
We planted ground cover and grasses, succulents and seaside daisies and added local mulch.

Ryobi circular saw
Makita power drill
Makita battery powered drills to screw in bugle screws to the star pickets and decking screws to attach the merbua edging.
Dulux weather shield monument paint.
- Step 1:
Clearing weeds, shrubs, dead trees and branches from the sloping verge.
- Step 2:
Painting the sleepers with Dulux Monument.
- Step 3:
Planning the the positioning of the sleepers and securing them with star pickets.
- Step 4:
Securing the merbua edging to the base of the sleepers with decking screws.
- Step 5:
Filling the area behind the sleepers with garden soil and planting a range of ground covers, grasses and succulents.
- Step 6:
Place a number granite rocks to add additional landscaping and to compliment the sleepers.
- Step 7:
Add a quantity of local mulch to reduce weed growth, retain moisture and enhance the look of the landscaping.
