Nursery from converted spare room

The project:

Just welcomed our first grandchild to the family. Had to convert our spare room into a nursery for when they come to visit from Karratha and stay with us. Clean, patch and sand walls, new paint, new carpet, sand window ledge and restain. Just waiting on furniture to complete.

- Materials:

Bunnings had all the material I needed, plus advice from staff. Sellys sugar soap to clean the walls, Sellys Spakfilla for repairs to walls, sand paper and sanding board, different grades of flexovit sand paper for sanding machine, Dulux primer over fresh repairs, Dulux Wash n Wear in Sea Foam green applied with Paint Partner 230mm roller kit, Feast Watson stain & finish for the window ledge.

- Tools:

Paint Partner paint roller kit, Haydon electric sander, generic brand paint brushes from Bunnings.

- Step 1:

Sellys sugar soap to clean the walls

- Step 2:

Sellys Spakfilla to fix chips and repairs after removing picture hooks etc

- Step 3:

Sand paper, 80, 120 grit, finish with 240 on repairs. Use a sanding board for smoother finish. Make sure to wipe down after sanding to get rid of sanding dust which will effect the finish.

- Step 4:

Use a primer over all new repairs and once dry lightly sand with 240 to help new paint to adhere. Start doing all your cutting in around the ceiling, floor and corners. I used a piece of card board as and edge for the carpet so the paint brush didn't pick up fluff and dust from the carpet. Wasn't too concerned about the carpet as it was being replaced. Then you're ready to paint using a new roller for better finish, allow to dry and apply second coat. As it was winter time and the room was cold I was using a heater to help the drying time.

- Step 5:

The wooden window ledge need re doing as well, it was sun bleached in parts. Gave it a heavy sand to get past the sun bleach back to the nice timber colour. Then a fine sand, 240 grit, to remove and scratch marks. Then I was was ready to apply two coats of stain finish for a glossy fresh timber look.

Congratulations on welcoming your first grandchild! What a wonderful reason to tackle a renovation. You've done a great job refreshing the room, and the soft green walls paired with the restored timber window ledge have created a calm, welcoming space. I'm sure it will be well used whenever your grandchild comes to stay.

Thanks also for documenting each step of the process and sharing the products you used. I'm sure your tips, particularly around preparing the walls and sanding the repairs, will be helpful for members planning a similar room refresh.
