The project:
When we bought our first home in 2009, the kitchen was tired, leaking and no longer fit for a family life. The windows leaked every time it rained, the ceiling had rotted, the chipboard cupboards were musty, and there wasn't even room for our fridge in the kitchen. We spent years saving to create a modest, functional farmhouse kitchen where our family can cook, gather and make memories together. It's not extravagant but more importantly its warm, practical and built with love.

- Step 1:
1. We demolished the old kitchen, removing the outdated cabinetry and moved a non-load-bearing internal wall to create a more open-plan space.
2. Raised the ceiling and removed external walls, replacing them with new timber framing, insulation, wiring and external cladding.
3. Installed a new Colourbond roof to replace the old leaking roof and protect the home from future weather damage.
4. Had a licensed electrician completely rewire the kitchen to suit the new layout.
5. Installed the new window (by my husband and father-in-law), then completed plastering to bring the room to lock-up stage.
6. Prepared the room for fit-out by painting, cleaning and completing all finishing work before cabinetry installation.
7. Installed the floating flooring ourselves on top of the new tongue and grove flooring we installed (replacing the original damaged floorboards, the floor joists were still strong/fit), creating a durable foundation for the new kitchen.
8. My husband and I assembled and installed all the cabinetry, carefully fitting each unit to maximise storage and functionality.
8. Measured, ordered and installed the benchtops, with my husband completing the installation himself.
9. Finished the kitchen with a handmade tiled splashback, installed by my mother, adding the final farmhouse touch to our family kitchen.
10. Electrician returned to install power points, oven, cooktop and light fitting.
