The project:
DIY wooden stool/side table. Great by the entry way or by the shelf
- Materials:
- oak DAR, I used 5 lengths of 1.8m https://www.bunnings.com.au/65-x-32mm-1-8m-dar-tasmanian-oak-select-1-8m_p0070280
- Sandpaper
- Wood glue
- Polyurethane
- Optional stain
- Tools:
- Circular saw
- Plunge router
- Jigsaw (I’d recommend the jigsaw to cut the round seat, I just didn’t have one available)
- Step 1:
Cut your DAR to size. I wanted a 450mm high, 410mm diameter stool.
For the seat: cut 7x420mm lengths and glue them together.
For the sides of the stool: cut 10x460mm lengths. Glue two sets of 5x lengths together for each side.
For the centre bracing: cut 4x330mm lengths and glue together.

Cut the seat into a circle. I used the plunge router but would recommend using a jigsaw.
If using a plunge router, drill a hole into the centre of your piece and use a rod to create an even circle with your router. The face with the hole will be the underside of your seat.
Cut bevels into both sides of the legs to line up with the edges of your seat
- Step 3:
Use a plunge router to cut 10mm mortises into the underside of the seat and 10mm tenons on each side piece. Test the fit and tweak as required.
Note: if just using as a side table, you can use dowel joints instead.
- Step 4:
Cut a 5mm mortis into each centre face of the legs and 5mm tenon on the sides of the bracing piece. Test the fit and tweak as needed.
Once all pieces fit together, sand as needed, glue stool together and clamp to dry.
- Step 5:
Stain if desired and finish with polyurethane.
