Floating shelf with drawer

The project:

I wanted a clean and practical shelf in the entrance area after repainting and reflooring the complete house.

I made and installed this custom shelf with drawer

- Materials:

Merbau sheet 18mm and 26mm.

Drawer slides

Screws

Glue

Wall plugs to anchor to the wall

Sand paper

Cabot's clear polyurethane

- Tools:

Tape measure

Spirit level

Drill and drill bits

Drop saw

Table saw

Router and round over bit

Pocket hole jig and screws

Spacer / packer to hold drawe off the bottom to install drawer slides

- Step 1:

Design - The design was fundamental. I wanted it to fit the wall perfectly with no screws, nails or drawer handles seen in the build or attachment to the wall. It needed the corner rounded as it is a thoroughfare a sharp edge was less than desirable.

So with a tape measure, pencil and paper the many versions were sketched until I was happy with the design.

- Step 2:

I rough cut all timber oversize from the large sheets.

I then marked the back and top in situ to match the actual size and angle of the walls (knowing they are never perfect square).

Once I had these fitting without gaps it was a case of making the rest to suit.

- Step 3:

I then pulled it all apart to sand and clear coat all parts so all the sides of all components were sealed.

- Step 4:

Reassembled the shelf and drawer with glue and screws.

- Step 5:

Installed the shelf with screws into studs where it was possible and wall plugs when not possible from inside the shelf where the drawer would be into both the back and side walls for strength.

Installed the shelf and the project was completed.
