How to clean mould off panel walls?

hi

I’m unsure on how to approach the mould situation..

would an external cleaner for mould work better .. or scrub with something more natural like vinegar?

will normal wall paint be okay or should I invest in the kitchen bathroom paint which has the ingredients to be easier to clean in future?

We have cleaned the walls and as advised used the kitchen bathroom paint :) we are hoping once the house is relevelled it may help with the condensation problem with windows etc. later down the track we may end up putting more modern windows in.

Thank you for sharing your question about the mould in your home. From your photos, the mould appears to be mostly concentrated around the window and lower sections of the VJ walls, which suggests moisture from condensation, leaks around the window, or a combination of both. I can't tell for certain from images alone whether it's only surface mould or if it has penetrated the timber lining, but it doesn't immediately look like a case where painting over it would be the answer.

I'd start by cleaning the mould before thinking about paint. For interior timber walls, I'd be inclined to use white vinegar or a dedicated interior mould cleaner rather than an exterior mould cleaner. Exterior mould removers often contain stronger chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or other ingredients designed for masonry, concrete and outdoor surfaces. They can be harsher on interior finishes and create stronger fumes indoors. Vinegar is a good option for light to moderate surface mould because it can help kill mould on porous surfaces without leaving a residue. Whichever product you choose, wear gloves, eye protection and a P2 respirator, and ensure the room is well ventilated while you work.

Once the mould has been removed, allow the walls to dry thoroughly and identify the source of the moisture. If the mould returns quickly, or you discover damp timber, a leaking window, roof leak or widespread mould behind the lining boards, I'd recommend having a mould remediation specialist inspect it before carrying on with painting.

For repainting, I wouldn't use standard interior wall paint if this room has had mould issues. A quality kitchen and bathroom paint is a worthwhile investment because it contains mould-resistant additives and produces a finish that's easier to wipe clean in the future. Just remember that even mould-resistant paint is not a treatment for active mould. The mould must be removed and the moisture issue resolved first, otherwise it will simply return beneath or through the new coating.

Looking at the age of the home and the timber lining, it may also be worth checking that the windows seal properly and that the room has adequate ventilation. Improving airflow and reducing condensation can make a significant difference in preventing mould from returning after you've completed the restoration.
