Backyard pathway using stepping stones

The project:

I transformed an unused narrow side garden into a low-maintenance feature pathway using stepping stones and some small shrubs that would act as ground cover and grasses. Starting with a blank garden bed, I installed weed mat, positioned the pavers to create a winding path, then added decorative white pebbles and a mix of hardy grasses and groundcovers for texture and year-round interest. This budget-friendly project has turned an overlooked space into an attractive and functional garden feature that complements the deck and creates a peaceful walkway through the backyard.

- Materials:

Weed mat

Stepping stones

Pathway solar lights

White pebbles

Garden mix

Paver glue

- Tools:

shovel, hammer, rubber mallet, levelling tool, rake

- Step 1:

Levelled the ground using rake and levelling tool, removed all the weed. Topped the ground with Brunnings garden mix.

- Step 2:

placed the weed mat, stepping stones and plants in a pattern

- Step 3:

Planted all the shrubs by digging small holes in weed mat and in the ground. I used a variety of shrubs and some grasses to make it hardy.

- Step 4:

spread the white pebbles all around the plants and pavers

- Step 5:

added solar lights around the plants

- Step 6:

sprayed paver glue on the pebbles to ensure no movement

You've done a fantastic job transforming what was an overlooked side garden into an inviting pathway. The winding stepping stones, contrasting white pebbles and mix of grasses and shrubs work really well together to create a space that's both practical and visually appealing. The addition of the solar lights is a lovely finishing touch that I'm sure looks great in the evening.
