The project:
When we moved into our small 1970s home, we quickly discovered that the previous owners' renovation had left no room for a dining table. While we loved the kitchen's size and layout, we knew it wouldn't be truly functional if we couldn't gather with family and friends around a table. We wanted a solution that maximised our space without compromising the kitchen we loved. That's when we decided to transform our island bench by extending it with a tabletop, creating a practical, welcoming dining area that seamlessly blended style and function while making our home far more versatile for everyday living.

- Step 1:
1. Measure and prepare the space
Carefully measure the existing island bench and determine the desired size of the new tabletop, ensuring there is enough overhang for comfortable seating. We went with a 300mm overhang. Mark out the new dimensions, clear the workspace, and protect surrounding cabinetry and flooring before beginning.
- Step 2:
2. Mark and make the first cut
Using a straight edge, draw a clear cut line just above the existing bench top. With the circular saw, carefully make the first cut, while avoiding damage to the surrounding cabinetry.
- Step 3:
3. Remove the old benchtop
Make a second cut beneath the existing benchtop to separate it from the cabinetry. Once the cuts are complete, carefully remove the old benchtop, leaving the island clean, level, and ready for the new tabletop to be installed.
- Step 4:
4. Install and finish the new tabletop
Position the new benchtop and secure it to the island using L-brackets, checking that it is level before tightening all fixings. Sand the entire surface until smooth, then apply the varnish according to the manufacturer's instructions.
