The project:
We upcycled a bookcase with storage box like this into a mudroom for the home entryway or laundry
- Materials:
Zinsser water based undercoat
Poly interior timber filler
Dulux interior ultra air low sheen paint in white
Diablo orbital sandNET sanding discs 120, 180 and 240 grit
Unipro 30mm round chalk brush
Unipro 100mm mini roller kit low sheen
Cabot’s polyurethane water based clear satin
Piece of cut pine wood as backing for hooks
Hooks and drawer pulls
3 x wood screws
3M Scotchbrite non scratch scrub sponge
- Tools:
Makita battery operated orbital sander
Makita 18v multi tool
Hammer
Ozito 12v cordless drill
Craftright 13 piece drill bit set
- Step 1:
Vacuumed bookcase then cleaned the entire piece with water and vinegar. Scuff sanded the bookcase with a 240 grit sanding disc. Wiped down the bookcase after scuff sanding
- Step 2:
Removed the shelving with a hammer and multi tool and sanded that area to smooth, then filled any holes or imperfections with timber filler. Allowed filler to set then sanded all those areas smooth. Vacuumed area.
- Step 3:
Sanded the seat and drawer front with orbital sander and hand sanded corners by hand
to raw wood then covered whilst the painting process was undertaken.
- Step 4:
Used paint brush and roller to apply one coat of Zinsser undercoat on the mudroom
Used paint brush and roller to apply 3 coats of Dulux ultra or low sheen paint on the mudroom
- Step 5:
White washed the raw wood areas with a 9:1 water to paint ratio with a sponge. Allowed to dry thoroughly then hand painted 3 coats of the polyurethane clear coat, hand sanding lightly with a 240 grit sanding disc between coats for a silky smooth finish and durability.
- Step 6:
White washed the pre cut pine piece of wood and sealed for durability with the clear polyurethane the same as step 5.
Measured and aligned the pre cut raw pine piece onto the mudroom and attached with wood screws from behind.
- Step 7:
Measured and drilled holes to attach coat hooks to pre cut piece of pine then attached coat hooks
Measured and drilled holes in pre cut piece of pine then attached with wood screws via back of mudroom.
- Step 8:
Measured and drilled holes in front of drawer then added drawer pulls
We left the inside of the storage box in the original condition because it was already equipped to handle the storing of your boots and footwear etc.
