The project:
Our bathroom suffered a serious waterproofing failure, leading to a full renovation. What started as a minor leak turned into mould, cracked and lifting tiles, and constant water ingress no amount of patching could fix. Temporary fixes kept failing, so we stripped everything back and rebuilt properly. We removed all old tiling, re-waterproofed from the substrate up, and replaced outdated fittings. Where we could, we reused rather than bought new: the mirror was upcycled with paint, the vanity base and top were second-hand, and part of the shower glass was salvaged, with the rest cut to order.

- Step 1:
Demolished the bathroom back to the brickwork, removed all old tiles, fittings, and the failed waterproofing membrane, exposing mould damage underneath.
- Step 2:
Repaired and prepped the substrate, then applied a full waterproofing membrane to floor and walls, paying close attention to corners, the shower recess, and penetrations.
- Step 3:
Replaced the electrical fittings with new including an exhaust fan, downlights, a double powerpoint, and a light switch before wall linings went back up.
- Step 4:
Set out and laid the black porcelain floor tiles using tile adhesive, spacers, and a tile saw for cuts around fittings.
- Step 5:
Tiled the walls with white gloss ceramic tiles, using the same adhesive and spacer system for consistent lines.
- Step 6:
Grouted and siliconed all tile joints and the shower recess with flexible, coloured grout and silicone for a durable, waterproof finish.
- Step 7:
Filled, sanded, primed, and painted the ceiling and remaining walls, including upcycling the existing mirror with a fresh coat of black spray paint.
- Step 8:
Installed the toilet suite, shower mixer, and twin shower, then fitted the shower screen using salvaged glass on one side and a new pane cut to order for the rest.
- Step 9:
Fitted the second hand vanity base and top, reconditioned and reinstalled to suit the new layout. Fitted the taps and faucet.
- Step 10:
Finished with the fit off: robe hook, towel rail, and toilet roll holder, then a final clean to complete the transformation.
