James’s school holidays garden deck

The project:

James (10yrs old) saw a video of someone building a deck, and decided that it would be a great school holidays project! He had the perfect spot in mind, so after measuring it up we headed off to Bunnings to get everything we would need. Mum helped with the circular saw and some of the drilling, but otherwise this was all driven by James. He was so proud of himself when we finished!

- Materials:

• 8 treated pine decking board planks (2.4m)
• 3 treated pine outdoor framing plank (2.4m)
• 50 pack of 50mm decking screws

- Tools:

• measuring tape
• Makita drill kit
• Makita circular saw

- Step 1:

1. Measure area and write it down!
2. Shop for supplies
3. Measure and cut wood
4. Create frame including cross beams
5. Place decking boards on one at a time and drill into the frame (using a spacer 2-3mm between every board)- make pilot holes first to avoid wood splitting, then drill the screws in.
6. Draw the angle onto the overhang of decking, and use circular saw to cut to size.
7. Place on old pavers to raise off the ground, and check everything is level and stable.
8. Place finishing touches (Corten steel garden edging along the front edge) and then stain with protective decking oil.
9. Enjoy the new deck!

It's wonderful to see James turning inspiration into action and creating something with his own hands. Taking on a project like this at just 10 years old shows fantastic enthusiasm, curiosity and a real willingness to learn new skills. The finished deck looks great, and it's even more special knowing he played such a big part in building it himself. A big well done to James, and to Mum for encouraging his creativity and helping bring his idea to life!
