Custom kids desk with storage

The project:

A custom built kids desk to fit the width of a wall pillar including a fold down desk with bookshelf storage.

- Materials:

Built from MDF panel cut down to fit the width of the end wall pillar.

- Tools:

Table saw to correctly size the width and height of the panels.

Router to round off the edges of the cabinet and table

- Step 1:

Cut the panels to size for width of the wall pillar and height of the desk to allow the kids chair fit in under the desk once folded up.

Glue book case panels together and pin with second fix nail gun, using 90 degree clamps to hold the corner panels together and in place while fixing.

Sized the desk panel to ensure that it would not protrude too much when folded out and would be supported by the collapsible hinges when locked in the up position.

All panels were sanded with palm orbital sander before priming and final paint.

This is a clever way to make the most of what could otherwise be an awkward space. The fold-down desk and integrated bookshelf create a practical study area while still allowing the room to be used when the desk is folded away. It looks like a neat, well-finished build.

Do you happen to have any progress photos from during the build? I'm sure other members would enjoy seeing how it all came together, particularly how you constructed the cabinet and installed the fold-down desk.
