Peaceful garden sanctuary with timber feature

The project:

I transformed an unused garden area into a functional and inviting outdoor space that complements my garden. The project included designing and building treated pine steps to improve access, adding a timber feature structure in the corner, and integrating the area with surrounding plants and garden beds and espalier to maximise spaces. The aim was to create a beautiful, practical space that could be enjoyed every day while supporting my love of gardening, sustainability and nature. The finished area is now a welcoming extension of my home, surrounded by edible plants, flowers and wildlife-friendly features

- Materials:

• Treated pine timber for steps – Bunnings
• Hardwood timber for corner structure – sourced/recycled timber (confirm source if known)
• Outdoor screws and fixings – Bunnings
• Garden soil/compost/soil improvers, sand, Bunnings/Daisys
• Mulch – Bunnings/Daisys
• Plants and seedlings – Bunnings/local nurseries/propagated from existing plants
• Garden edging/materials – Daisys
• Water feature-The Bali Shop
• Paint and stain-Bunnings

FUN FACT: l can see the Bunnings red hammer from my second story bedroom window.

- Step 1:

1. Planned the design and layout to suit the existing garden and improve access.

- Step 2:

Cleared and prepared the area for construction.

- Step 3:

Measured the space and marked out the position of the steps.

- Step 4:

Cut and assembled treated pine to create the steps.

Levelled and secured the steps into position.

- Step 5:

Constructed and installed the timber feature structure in the corner. Painted and stained structure and steps.

- Step 6:

Improved surrounding soil and prepared garden beds, Added plants, mulch and finishing touches to blend the area into the garden.

- Step 7:

Continued maintaining and developing the space with sustainable gardening practices,

Added bamboo feature, water feature,

fruit trees, worm farm, bee-friendly plants, fruit trees, plum, passion

fruit nectarine, lime, kaffir lime , lemon, lime, blueberry and herbs to name a few.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Netty17. It's marvellous to have you join us and many thanks for sharing your project.

You've turned an unused area into a peaceful garden retreat that's both beautiful and practical. The steps, timber feature and thoughtful planting all work together to create a space that looks like it has evolved naturally over time.

I really enjoyed looking through the progress photos and seeing how the garden developed. It's also nice to hear about the sustainable touches, from the edible plants and worm farm to the bee-friendly planting.

Out of curiosity, how long did the transformation take from start to finish? I'm sure other members would also be interested to know which plants have performed best in the space.
