This is where we refinished our fireplace surround to make it more modern and our style!

- Step 1:

Remove old gas heater or fireplace insert with tools and make sure gas is turned off by a licensed plumber or call in one to remove the unit. Remove other items from surrounding area and cover floor and furniture with plastic or canvas drop sheets as this will get very messy and dusty. Prepare tools to start scraping off old fake bricks, you will need scrapers & hammers.

- Step 2:

Using the scrapers and hammers get behind the old fake bricks and pry them off with the scraper and hammer pushing through the glue and lifting it off the original brick. Use a dustpan and broom to sweep up brick and put in plastic bags to dispose of. Once this has been done use the heat gun or paint stripper and paintbrushes to remove any other adhesive glue or paint layers.

- Step 3:

Lay out all your sandstone pieces and do a dry fit of how you want to start, starting from the bottom section. Then gather some of the next pieces going up on the front of the fireplace, (make sure these fit well and are placed ready to go on the floor infront). Then sort sandstone by sizes on the floor or in baskets. Then gather sizes that would be good for the thin sides of the fireplace near the wall. Once all this is laid out or in piles the move onto the next step.

- Step 4:

This next part you need to move quickly so your Tile Adhesive does not dry out, mix this in a bucket with the mixing attachment and drill and water then use your notched scraper to add this to the back of the sandstone pieces and the original brick working from the floor then up, you will need to hold each vertical piece for about 2-5 minutes each to ensure this quickly adheres to the bricks, once done each piece you can use off cuts of sandstone to hold each piece up on top of eachother vertically (for drying) when working on the surround. These are easy to get out later just don’t put too much adhesive near or around them.

- Step 5:

Once completed leave for two days to dry and set, remove small offcuts and prepare items for grouting. Wide joint grout, bucket, mixer attachment, piping bag, drill and acrylic paint. Mix this grout up and add paint to achieve the colour grout you desire. Apply the grout with a piping bag and use gloves to push deep into and around sandstone. Wipe the grout away as much as you can with warm water a sponge and microfibre cloths. Let set for two days then use wire metal brush to brush and dust around sandstone pieces, be careful not to scrub at the grout joints.

- Step 6:

Use the dustpan and brush then clean up the area, remove drop sheets and waste, get your new fireplace or heater fitted by a licensed plumber and electrician and enjoy!

What a dramatic transformation. The sandstone crazypaving gives the fireplace a completely different look and makes it a real feature of the room. I also enjoyed reading through your detailed project guide, particularly the tips on dry-laying the stone first and using small offcuts to support the vertical pieces while the adhesive cured.

Thanks as well for including the progress photos. They really help show how much work went into achieving the finished result.

I'm sure other members will be inspired by your makeover. Out of curiosity, was there a particular reason you chose sandstone over other stone finishes, and is there anything you'd do differently if you tackled another project like this?

we really liked the look of sandstone and my parents had their fireplace done professionally and we liked the look!
We actually didn’t use the angle grinder on any of the bottom pieces of sandstone to cut them and I would have liked to do that but we didn’t even think about it till a few days later, so that would be the only thing really!
