Custom kitchen cabinet drawers

The project:

Made custom drawers for my kitchen cabinet. Great way to maximise space.

- Materials:

• plywood: I used 12mm birch for durability
• drawer slides
• veneer sheeting
• Iron-on banding

- Tools:

• Circular saw
• Pocket hole jig and screws
• Wood glue
• Drill
• Sandpaper
• Clamps
• Polyurethane/paint

- Step 1:

Measure and cut your plywood to size

- Step 2:

Assemble your drawers with the pocket hole jig. Make sure you’re using wood glue as well.

From here you can paint the drawer or finish with polyurethane for a protective coat.

I also used iron-on banding to cover the raw edges.

- Step 3:

Clean out your existing cabinet and begin installing your drawers. I reinforced the sides of my cabinet with plywood as my dish-ware would be heavy.
Start from the bottom and use scrap timber as spacers.

- Step 4:

Apply veneer sheets to cover pocket holes and finish

Hi @ntrann,

This is a fantastic upgrade that makes much better use of the cabinet space. The finished drawers look like they were always part of the kitchen, and I really like the extra touches such as the iron-on edging and veneer to give everything a clean, professional finish.

Thanks as well for sharing the progress photos and build process. I'm sure they'll give other members the confidence to tackle a similar project in their own kitchen.
