The project:
Preserving 65+ year old house. Rather than knock down and rebuild, it is lovely to give life back to this enclosed old verandah’s timber floor boards. I’m not a carpenter but at age 79, I have called upon my old fitter and turner precision to restore.
- Materials:
I have used reclaimed timber that I have collected from off cuts and surplus to minimise waste and up upcycle. This included the material to repair the wall as depicted in the corner join. Nails of course to fasten boards.

Tape measure
Level
Saw
Timber planer
Sanding block and sand paper
Clamps.
Hammer
Set square
Pencil

- Step 1:
Tested soundness of existing boards and identify the boards requiring replacement.
- Step 2:
Remove floor boards that need replacement. Check soundness surrounding opening in floor. Shore up fitting to make sure flooring will be installed on solid flat base on floor frame.
- Step 3:
All edges on opened up flooring squared off for straight edges in preparation for new boards to abut. For interest created overlap pattern and this allows for new boards to be more securely locked in.
- Step 4:
Recycled timber measured (and measured again!) before cutting. Cut to size then sanded to create neat join of old and new up-cycled boards.
- Step 5:
New new boards nails in place to finish flooring.
