The most important part of choosing a respirator is selecting the right cartridge for the hazard you're working with. Ordinary dust masks only protect against particles and won't filter out gases or vapours. An A1P2 or A2P2 half-face respirator provides protection against both organic vapours and particulates, while an ABEK1P2 respirator offers protection against a broader range of gases.

When working with products that produce fumes, the most important thing is to ensure the area is well ventilated by opening windows and using a fan to circulate fresh air. I recommend using the 3M Medium Paint Project Reusable Half Facepiece Respirator rather than a standard 3M Builders P2 Respirator as it provides better filtration and a more secure fit.

Don't underestimate the spread of dust cutting masonry will cause throughout the home. It's extremely fine and abrasive.
Ensure you're wearing at least a P2 rated dust mask, eye protection and earmuffs.
When using a grinder, hold the tip of the vac with a crevice tool fitted to the debris side of the guard to maximise the effectiveness of the dust being removed. - Nailbag
When cutting masonry, particularly indoors, don't underestimate the amount of dust a dry cut-off blade will create. You'll need a proper filtration mask and I'd even recommend a full-face respirator, as the amount of dust can quickly overwhelm a standard dust mask.
