The project:
We transformed our tired, outdated outdoor area into a modern family entertaining space using products almost exclusively from Bunnings. We pressure-cleaned and painted the pavers, installed a DIY pergola, added decorative lattice screening, weed mat and white landscaping rocks, painted the roof and posts, and finished the space with plants and outdoor décor. The spa was the only item purchased elsewhere. As passionate DIYers, we completed the project ourselves, creating a welcoming space where our blended family of 7 children can relax, entertain and make lasting memories together. Bunnings helped bring our vision to life.
- Materials:
Most materials for this project were purchased from Bunnings, exterior paint, paver paint, pressure washer, decorative lattice, white landscaping rocks, weed mat, garden edging, plants, potting mix, paint accessories and landscaping supplies. The pergola purchased as kits form elsewhere, however all screws and accessories from Bunnings and the Spa elsewhere.

All of our power tools, hand tools, screws, fixings and DIY supplies were purchased from Bunnings. As keen DIY renovators, we rely on Bunnings for every project, and this outdoor transformation was no exception.
- Step 1:
Planning and preparation
We started by planning the layout and deciding how to transform our dark, outdated outdoor area into a modern family entertaining space. We measured the area, selected our materials from Bunnings and gathered all the tools needed for the project.
- Step 2:
Installing the pergola
We assembled and installed the DIY pergola ourselves, carefully securing it in place. This created a practical undercover entertaining area that could be enjoyed all year round.
- Step 3:
Site preparation
We removed the existing palm tree, cleared the garden beds and cleaned the entire area. The pavers were pressure washed to remove years of built-up dirt and grime, creating a clean surface ready for painting
- Step 4:
Painting and refreshing
We prepared and painted the pavers, roof, pergola and posts using exterior paint from Bunnings. This instantly modernised the space and completely changed the look of the outdoor area.
- Step 5:
Landscaping
We laid weed mat, installed edging and spread decorative white landscaping rocks to create a low-maintenance garden around the spa area. Decorative lattice screening was also installed for added privacy and style.
- Step 6:
Finishing touches
We added plants, outdoor furniture, lighting and décor to complete the space. The spa was installed, creating a relaxing outdoor retreat where our blended family can spend quality time together.

The finished result
After many weekends of DIY work and countless trips to Bunnings, we transformed a tired backyard into a stylish outdoor entertaining area. It’s now one of our favourite places to relax, entertain family and create memories together.
