The project:
I'm a keen DIY'er, and over the years, I've worked to create my outdoor oasis. This has included fish ponds, fountains, a Balinese hut, and decking. After retiring, I decided to complete the space with a traditional Finnish sauna. From the ground up, I prepared the site, constructed the frame, and finished it with a custom Red Cedar interior. I designed and built the benches, and later made the light covers from leftover Red Cedar, to reduce waste

- Step 1:
Prepared the site - cleared space, installed concrete foundation pads, and extended existing decking to create access
- Step 2:
Constructed the floor using bearers, floor joists, insulation, builder's wrap, and yellow tongue flooring
- Step 3:
Built the wall framing to my custom dimensions
- Step 4:
Installed the Colorbond roof and guttering
- Step 5:
Wrapped the structure with builder's wrap and installed the external cladding
- Step 6:
Tiled the floor
- Step 7:
Had an electrician complete the rough-in for the lighting and sauna heater
- Step 8:
Installed insulation, internal wrap, and Red Cedar lining
- Step 9:
Installed the sauna door
- Step 10:
Designed, built, and installed custom Red Cedar seating, as well as light covers using leftover timber
