The project:
Our laundry was cramped, old and starting to fall apart, making one of the hardest working rooms in our home frustrating to use. With our growing family in mind, we knew we needed a space that was practical, organised and built to last. We completed most of the renovation ourselves, bringing in a builder to modify a wall and relocate the entry door, a plumber to upgrade the plumbing, and a tiler to waterproof and tile the floor. Using quality Bunnings tiles and Kaboodle cabinetry, we transformed the space into a modern, functional laundry that we're proud of and that perfectly suits the needs of our busy family.

- Step 1:
Step 1: Demolition & Space Creation
We began by removing old cabinetry, flooring and the fibro wall lining that enclosed the plumbing behind the sink. We also demolished the adjoining hallway cupboard, which occupied valuable floor space and restricted movement through the laundry. Removing it gave us the opportunity to redesign the layout, creating a larger, more open and functional family laundry.

Step 2: Rebuilding the Layout
With the room stripped back, we reconfigured the space to better suit our growing family’s needs. A builder modified the wall, relocated the doorway and created a new entrance to the bathroom through the laundry, improving the overall flow and functionality of this part of the home. The plumbing was also upgraded to suit the new layout, creating the foundation for a practical and modern family laundry.

Step 3: Electrical, Waterproofing & Tiling
With the new layout complete, my partner, a qualified electrician, completed all of the electrical upgrades, including new lighting and powerpoints to suit the redesigned layout. A professional tiler then waterproofed and tiled the floor, creating a durable, easy-to-maintain base ready for the new cabinetry.

Step 4: Painting, Cabinetry & Finishing Touches
Fresh paint brightened the room before we installed the new cabinetry, bench tops, sink, tapware, splashback and external door. As the window beside the door prevented us from installing overhead cupboards, we turned this limitation into an advantage by installing a hanging rail for drying shirts and delicate clothing while still allowing natural light to fill the room. We also incorporated a concealed and integrated pull-out laundry hamper within the cabinetry to maximise floor space and keep dirty washing neatly out of sight. A sturdy wall-mounted hook is placed beside the doorway to keep the washing basket off the bench but within easy reach. The end result is a bright, organised and highly functional laundry suited to our everyday family life.
