The project:
Our dark mouldy bathroom hid a nightmare: a long term leak had rotted numerous lower joists, so we had to rebuild the structural bones. Because this level of the house sat on a concrete slab we had no access under half the bathroom so we couldn't alter the layout.
We recessed the pipes into the wall leading to the vanity. With a solid foundation in place, we focused on bringing warmth, light, and smart design into the room.
We worked within our strict structural layout constraints to turn a hazardous, non-compliant room into a bright, beautifully ventilated and highly functional sanctuary to last a lifetime.

- Pry Bar Set and Demolition Tool / hammer for ripping out old tiles and rotted timber
- Circular Saw for cutting out rotted wall frames
- Impact Driver and cordless drill
- Spirit Level and Framing Square
- Sandpaper and sanding block for smoothing wall and VJ panel filler
- Paint roller and brush for applying floor sealer and waterproofing
- Notched Trowel for spreading floor adhesive
- Tile Cutter / Angle Grinder with diamond blade for cutting floor and wall tiles
- Grout Float and Tile Sponge with bucket for spreading grout
- Hand saw for cutting VJ panelling
- Finishing nail gun for installing architraves
- Caulking Gun for applying silicone sealant
- Paint brushes and rollers for painting ceiling, trim, and VJ panels
- Adjustable wrench and screwdrivers for assembling tapware, vanity, toilet, and hardware
- Step 1:
The first step was to demolish the bathroom and fix all the rotted floor plates and studs.
- Step 2:
The waste pipe from the sink was coming out of the end of the original cabinet into the wall cavity. We had our plumber re-plumb all the pipes into the wall, he also simplified all the pipes for the shower. We could not change the layout of the bathroom due to having no access under half of the room and also being concrete floors.
- Step 3:
Next was insulation, the original bathroom had no insulation. Our electrician ran all new electrical cables for the strip sensor lighting, ceiling light, mirror, fan and powerpoints.
- Step 4:
Villaboard was then installed and set. Ceiling completed, cornices set.
- Step 5:
Door and shower angles were installed, the concrete sealed, two layers of waterproofing, then the tiler put the floor screed down, once dried we put another two layers of waterproofing.
- Step 6:
Finally the tiling!
- Step 7:
Grouting.
- Step 8:
VJ wall paneling was installed, nail holes filled and sanded.
- Step 9:
Architraves around the window and door were installed, VJ, ceiling and trims were sealed and painted.
The vanity, backlit mirror, wall exhaust, ceiling light, light switch, blinds, vanity, basin, toilet, tap wear were all installed
- Step 10:
Finally the frameless shower screen was installed.
To complete the bathroom and to save space we installed a barn door.
